BRING YOUR NEXT QUESTION
Let’s put it on the court.
Start youth basketball defense with responsibilities
Teach the player guarding the ball to stay balanced, and teach teammates to see the ball and their assignment. Explain helping and recovering before adding a complicated defensive scheme.
Make the first job visible
Ask each player to show the basket, the ball, and the opponent they are responsible for. Freeze a practice possession when help is needed and discuss who moves next; a static diagram cannot show every offensive response.
Check the league before choosing a defense
Youth leagues can restrict zone defense, pressing, or where pressure begins. Read the rules for the current age group and competition rather than assuming an AAU, school, or recreation rule applies everywhere.
Questions coaches ask
Does a 2–3 zone mean every defender stays in one spot?
No. The shape is only a starting reference. Responsibilities change as the ball and offensive players move.
Which defense is allowed for my team?
Your league or tournament rules determine that. Use the rules checklist and ask the coordinator when a restriction is unclear.
