SetupBegin a few steps from a lowered basket. If the player cannot reach comfortably, use a reachable wall spot instead. Give each shooter a separate clear station.
Coaching pointGet close. Lift. Finish tall.
SetupMake a short lane for each player and keep lanes well apart. The coach stands where everyone can see the signal. Begin with walking and no ball to learn the stop.
Coaching pointGreen: go. Red: gather and finish.
SetupPartners stand a comfortable short pass apart. Put two flat markers between them as a wide gate. Leave space behind each player for a missed catch.
Coaching pointHands ready. Bounce it to your partner.
SetupGive each child a clear space and a marker to return to. Begin without a basket so the child controls how high the ball travels. A coach demonstrates a very small toss.
Coaching pointWatch it. Two hands. Quiet feet.
SetupMake two wide gates behind the defender. The attacker starts several walking steps in front. There is no ball; everyone first rehearses moving and stopping with space between bodies.
Coaching pointMove your feet. Leave room.
SetupPut two passers on wide markers and a defender a few steps inside the player being guarded. Name that matchup clearly. This is a slow awareness activity, with no steals or contact.
Coaching pointFind the ball. Find your buddy.
SetupPlace four markers around a player, only a few walking steps away. Give each station plenty of space. Explain that the player moves toward a marker and stops before stepping on it.
Coaching pointLook. Move. Stop with space.
SetupMake three “islands” with flat markers in each player’s own area. Everyone starts at an island with a ball. Show the route at walking pace and keep neighboring routes separate.
Coaching pointSmall trip. Soft dribble. Easy stop.
SetupGive every child a personal lane with a start and a stopping area. Demonstrate three walking steps followed by a gentle two-foot landing, without a ball and without jumping for height.
Coaching pointSoft feet. Quiet statue.
SetupPlayers stand facing each other about 6 to 8 feet apart. Player A holds the basketball; Player B has open hands ready to signal.
Coaching pointPound low, chin up, scan the court.
SetupSet two cones 12 feet apart. Player A acts as the offensive leader and stands between the cones. Player B acts as the defender facing them.
Coaching pointStay low, push off the trail foot, keep wide base.
SetupSet two markers 12 to 15 feet apart facing each other. Partners stand on their assigned markers, one holding a basketball.
Coaching pointShow hands, step to target
SetupSet four cones in a straight line 8 feet apart down the floor. Players line up at the baseline with a basketball.
Coaching pointSlow crawl, quick drop
SetupUse four cones to make two parallel lanes 20 feet long with at least 6 feet between them. One partner and one ball start in each lane.
Coaching pointEyes up. Keep it close.
SetupPartners stand 15 feet apart in a clear half-court lane. One holds the ball; the defender begins facing them. Leave room to stop without touching the ball holder.
Coaching pointSprint hard, chop fast, sit down low.
SetupPlace pairs along the sideline, each pair with one ball and two cones set 15 feet apart. Partner A starts with the ball at cone 1, Partner B waits at cone 2.
Coaching pointStop feet, hand the gift, snatch and go!
SetupDivide players into pairs at one basket. Shooter starts 8 to 12 feet from the hoop in a comfortable range. Partner stands near the rim as passer and rebounder.
Coaching pointFeet down, hips loaded
SetupSet two cones along the sideline 15 feet apart. One dribbler starts at the first cone facing forward; one defender begins 3 feet in front as a guided shadow.
Coaching pointDrop low, back up two steps, change lanes
SetupPlace one marker close to the basket and the second one small step farther out on the same side. One partner shoots while the other rebounds from outside the landing space.
Coaching pointSame shape at the next spot.
SetupMark a comfortable wing shooting spot. Start two walking steps to its side with a ball. Leave the rebound path clear and keep other stations outside it.
Coaching pointArrive facing the target.
SetupMake a left gate and a right gate with two cones each. Start the dribbler several walking steps below the middle. The coach points to one gate while standing outside the routes.
Coaching pointSee the gate. Take the ball with you.
SetupGive the player two balls and enough room that a lost ball cannot enter another station. Start in place; walking is a later progression, not the first requirement.
Coaching pointTwo hands working. One steady base.
SetupSet two short parallel lanes, each with a start and finish marker. Partners begin level with one another. The ball starts with the player on the left.
Coaching pointPass first. Move next. Show your hands.
SetupA catcher stands beside the rim with room to land. The partner stands several steps away on the same side and makes a gentle backboard toss. Keep all other players clear.
Coaching pointSee the bounce. Meet it with two hands.
SetupPlace a dribbler at one end of a wide channel and a defender several steps ahead. The defender shadows without stealing. Leave clear space beyond the finish marker.
Coaching pointStay in view. Keep your space.
SetupPlace two passers far enough apart to make a comfortable pass. Each defender names one player to guard. The ball defender starts with a safe cushion; the other stands where both ball and matchup are visible.
Coaching pointBall moves, feet move.
SetupSet three wide gates in a staggered lane. A leader starts ahead with a generous gap to the follower. There is no ball, tagging or race to catch the leader.
Coaching pointFollow the path. Keep the gap.
SetupMake a compact diamond. Name one forward segment, one sideways segment and one turn-and-run segment. Walk the pattern before adding speed and keep waiting players outside it.
Coaching pointSlow to turn. Push into open space.
SetupOne partner starts with the ball and the other waits at a receiving station. Mark a short dribbling lane and a separate outside return route. Set a shared goal of tidy deliveries rather than speed.
Coaching pointClear lane. Stop. Deliver.
SetupPlace four named or numbered targets around a player. Begin with no ball so the coach can demonstrate the planted pivot foot. Add a held ball only after the turn is understood.
Coaching pointOne foot stays. Turn to see.
SetupTwo attackers begin several walking steps from a wide cone gate. One defender stands between them and the gate. The target is a controlled catch beyond the gate, not a basket or a fast break.
Coaching pointFind the open hands.
SetupGive each mover a lane with soft beanbags at one end and home at the other. The group shares one collection goal. Players never steal from one another or grab objects from clothing.
Coaching pointDribble, gather, then collect.
SetupEach pair stands on opposite sides of a wide marker gate. The team chooses a small collective target of controlled gate passes. Keep distances individual and passing lanes separate.
Coaching pointMake the next catch easy.
SetupStart the handler below a center marker. A guided defender waits several steps ahead and shades one exit; two cones mark separated left and right windows.
Coaching pointSlow enough to see. Quick into space.
SetupThree attackers form a wide triangle. A guided defender begins inside it and shades one passing line. Keep the triangle small enough for controlled passes.
Coaching pointOne foot stays. Two windows to see.
SetupMark a wide approach lane and a finish gate. The coach names the exit the defender is protecting. Begin with guided dribbling and a clear stopping buffer.
Coaching pointProtect space with your feet.
SetupStart one attacker on a wing with a guided on-ball defender. A second attacker waits opposite with their own defender inside. The coach announces a controlled drive; establish clear stopping space.
Coaching pointHelp the gap. Recover on the pass.
SetupPlace a start marker, a closeout marker several steps ahead and a recovery gate to one side. The closeout target is a marker, not a person. Walk the turn before increasing pace.
Coaching pointBrake. See the exit. Turn and go.
SetupMark left, middle and right lanes. Players start level with comfortable passing distances. They stay in their own lanes rather than weaving across one another, and walk back outside the runway.
Coaching pointStay wide. Pass ahead. Keep control.
SetupPlace two partners on wide passing spots and a receiver approaching a middle marker from the side. Leave space around the receiver for a controlled stop and turn.
Coaching pointCatch in balance. Turn to a window.
SetupA passer sends the ball to a stationary wing receiver. Rehearse the catch and identify the pivot foot before adding a drive. Use a clear lane with no live defender initially.
Coaching pointBall down before the pivot comes up.
SetupMark two end zones. Teams score one point for a controlled catch inside the attacking zone. Begin with walking defenders, no ball-stripping and no dribbles; a player holding the ball may pivot legally.
Coaching pointPass, then find new space.
SetupPlace four cones in a wide box, about 12 to 15 feet apart. Put three players at three cones, leaving one cone empty. One player starts with the ball.
Coaching pointStep, snap your wrists, and relocate on balance.
SetupPlace two cones at the wings, 15 feet from the hoop. Split players behind the cones. Only one player has the basketball and uses the basket at a time.
Coaching pointGather low, land on two feet, rise straight up.
SetupPlace one cone at the top of the key and one on the right wing. A passer starts at the top with a basketball, and a receiver stands at the wing cone. Extra players form a short line behind the top cone.
Coaching pointPass, cut, show your hands.
SetupPlace the receiver at one cone about 12 feet from the passer. A third player acts as a passive defender at arm’s length from the passer. Leave a clear side window toward the receiver.
Coaching pointKeep one foot. Find a window.
SetupPlace 1 cone on the right wing and 1 cone on the left wing, both 18 feet from the hoop. Player 1 starts at a cone with a basketball; Player 2 waits as the rebounder under the rim.
Coaching pointEyes on the box. Gather on balance.
SetupPlace 2 cones along the three-point arc 15 feet apart. Two offensive players stand at the cones. One defender guards the player without the ball, sinking into a help position midway toward the key.
Coaching pointSee ball, see player, slide and recover.
SetupOne player starts under the basket as the rebounder. The second player stands on the wing as the outlet target. The third player stands near the free-throw line as the shooter/tosser.
Coaching pointTwo hands up, chin the ball, pivot to the line.
SetupSet up groups of three. Player A starts at the top of the key with the ball. Player B starts on the wing with defender C playing guided, controlled defense.
Coaching pointRead the lane: clear to share, blocked to drive!
SetupUse five offensive players: 1 at the top, 4 and 5 at the elbows, and 2 and 3 in the corners. Add three guided defenders on the guard and elbow players. Additional players rotate in after each rep.
Coaching pointSee both elbows, hit the open chest, cut with speed!
SetupPlayer 1 starts with the ball near the slot. Player 2 sets up as a stationary screener at the mid-wing. Player 3 starts in the corner.
Coaching pointSet the feet, brush the shoulder, take the handoff!
SetupSet two perimeter cones at each shooter’s comfortable range. In a pair, the shooter starts with the ball at one cone and the partner waits as the passer. In a group of three, the third player rebounds. Use separate safe stations for additional groups.
Coaching pointStop feet before the hands meet
SetupOne passer stands on the sideline. Two offensive players line up near the lane line. Two passive defenders match up. The remaining players wait on the baseline to rotate.
Coaching pointSet the screen, step into the catch
SetupPlace two offensive players 12 to 16 feet from the rim spaced 15 feet apart. One coach or player stands on the baseline with a ball ready to pass.
Coaching pointFast eyes, calm feet
SetupSet 3 defenders in a triangle zone inside the key. Position 1 offensive passer on the wing and 2 offensive receivers flashing between the defenders.
Coaching pointFind the gap, show your hands
SetupPlace 4 offensive players at the wing, high post, short corner, and top safety. Place 2 defenders covering the high post and lane.
Coaching pointRead the chest, pass to the open chest
SetupOne ball handler inside the box, two defensive trappers pressing them, and two offensive outlet players standing outside opposite box boundaries.
Coaching pointChin the ball and step through
SetupThree offensive players start in the backcourt: a baseline inbounder, a guard at a short sideline receiving window and a middle receiver near the backcourt free-throw-line area. Three defenders provide light guided pressure.
Coaching pointWait for the window, catch with two hands
SetupPair up players around the key. Defender starts on the low block facing the offensive player who stands outside the lane. Coach stands at the top of the key with a basketball.
Coaching pointFind your player, seal with hips, chin the ball
SetupPlace two cones at half court 15 feet apart to mark starting spots for two attackers. One defender sets up inside the top of the key facing them.
Coaching pointFreeze the helper, feed the open lane
SetupPlace cones along sideline lanes at midcourt. Five players take defensive shell positions around one key. Coach holds the ball at the free-throw line.
Coaching pointSecure, pivot wide, fill the line
SetupPut a passer at the top, a stationary screener at the wing and a shooter in the corner. The coach stands behind the cutter and gives a trailing or inside-denial cue without contact.
Coaching pointRead first. Get open. Settle the feet.
SetupPut a shooter on one wing, an outlet at the top and a defender near the paint. The outlet begins with the ball; the defender varies a controlled closeout on the pass.
Coaching pointSee the contest before the choice.
SetupStart a handler in the backcourt with one defender ahead and a second helper off to a side. Mark a wide channel and an exit line. The coach controls the pressure and stops unsafe contact.
Coaching pointSee the second defender before the trap.
SetupPlace a handler at the top, a wing receiver and a safety on the opposite side. A guided defender starts inside the lane and shows help as the handler approaches.
Coaching pointDrive to see. Pitch to hands.
SetupFour attackers occupy the corners of a wide rectangle. Two defenders start inside. Choose a rectangle that permits crisp passes without overhead lobs or collisions.
Coaching pointMove the window before the ball.
SetupMatch three pairs around the key, with defenders between their attacker and the basket. A coach holds the ball near the free-throw line. Start with guided movement and no pushing.
Coaching pointFind your player, then find the ball.
SetupPlace one attacker and defender on each side of the lane. The coach stands outside the key and sends controlled rebounds that may travel wider than the paint.
Coaching pointTrack wide. Secure first. See the outlet.
SetupPut an attacker on a wing and a defender near the paint. The coach passes from the top. The attacker has a two-dribble limit after the catch; the defender leaves a safe landing cushion.
Coaching pointArrive balanced. Finish the stop.
SetupPut a driver on the right wing and receivers at the left wing and corner. Two defenders begin on the weak side. Walk through who covers the drive, who takes the first wing pass, and who then recovers to the corner.
Coaching pointCall your player before you recover.
SetupSet two exit gates ahead of an attacker and a shadow defender, leaving a generous cushion between them. Establish no-contact rules and a buffer beyond both exits. There is no ball.
Coaching pointRead the space. Own the stop.
SetupPut a rebounder under one basket, an outlet on a nearby side and a finisher in the opposite wide lane. Walk through one rebound-to-outlet-to-finish sequence without defenders.
Coaching pointClean outlet. Wide lane. Recover.
SetupPut an attacker on the wing, a defender a safe step away and a passer at the top. Agree on guided contact limits and a short two-dribble attack after the catch.
Coaching pointRead the feet. Keep your pivot.
SetupBegin with three spaced attackers and matched defenders. Normal baskets count normally. Add one bonus point for a controlled catch from a well-timed basket cut, whether or not the next shot goes in.
Coaching pointCut into space. Pass to a window.
SetupPlace attackers on a wing and the opposite perimeter. One defender starts inside the lane to close to the wing; the other guards the outlet. The coach passes from the top to begin.
Coaching pointSee the arrival. Keep an outlet.
SetupMark five spots at distances each shooter can reach comfortably. One shoots, one rebounds and one passes from outside the landing path. Set a short round of one attempt at each spot.
Coaching pointGood range. Ready feet. Help the next shooter.
SetupStart three matched pairs with one offensive player at the shooting wing and two away from the ball. The coach supplies a controlled shot or toss from that wing while the defense identifies its checks.
Coaching pointSee the weak side before the ball drops.
SetupOne attacker waits on a wing and the other in the opposite corner. A defender begins inside the lane. Only one attacker is live at a time; the waiting player stays outside the rep.
Coaching pointNew angle. Same balance. Finish it.
SetupSpace four attackers around the perimeter and assign each a defender. Start with passes only. Agree on your team’s gap and rotation rules before introducing a controlled drive.
Coaching pointTravel with the pass. Help only the gap.
SetupSpace three attackers around the perimeter with matched defenders. The coach’s starting pass creates a controlled closeout. Use normal scoring and discuss a decision bonus before play.
Coaching pointCreate a gap. Find the next advantage.
SetupSet two teams of three and define a stop as a legal turnover or a secure defensive rebound. A missed shot without possession is not a completed stop. Each defensive turn lasts exactly three possessions.
Coaching pointTalk early. Finish with the ball.
SetupUse one half court with three offensive players at the top and wings and three defenders matched to them. One offensive player starts with the ball.
Coaching pointPass to the open space, don't hold the ball.
SetupSet 4 cones in a wide box around the perimeter (top, wings, and corner). Form 3 offensive perimeter players and 1 active defensive player in the middle.
Coaching pointMove when the ball flies, stay in line of sight.
SetupOne inbounder on the baseline, one middle outlet near the free-throw line, and one trailing safety player, matched by 3 controlled press defenders.
Coaching pointCatch, pivot, see your safety
SetupTwo defenders start inside the paint. Two offensive players align at the wings. Coach stands at the top of the key with a basketball.
Coaching pointCall your check, box out, snap the outlet
SetupPlace three attackers spread across the center line: middle, left wing, right wing. Place two defenders in a vertical tandem inside the key.
Coaching pointWide lanes, quick early look
SetupThree offensive players line up at the point and both wings. Three defensive players match up in active half-court defense.
Coaching pointWhen they drive, slide to sight
SetupOrganize two teams of three and agree on a short work block before starting. Every change of possession flows toward the other basket, with normal legal play and controlled contests.
Coaching pointSecure it. See it. Then go.
SetupEach team gets one three-possession sequence: attack, defend, attack. Check the ball and reset bodies between possessions. Award one point for each successful part rather than requiring a perfect streak.
Coaching pointNew possession. Same team habits.
Original activity drafts, pending basketball-coach review. Suggested durations are flexible.
GOOD DRILLS. ONE USEFUL SESSION.
Collect the reps. Put them in order. Get back to coaching.
Explain the setup, demonstrate one repetition, and give players one cue to try. Adjust the distance, group size, or pace when the activity stops teaching the intended skill.
Use the space and equipment you have to reduce waiting. Small groups can provide more chances to pass and move than a single long line, provided each group has a clear area and knows where the ball is going.
A faster activity is not automatically a better one. First look for controlled passes, balanced movement, and players recognizing the next decision. Add a receiver or defender when the basic pattern stays clear.
There is no single useful duration for every group. Use the listed time as a starting point and adjust based on attention, repetition quality, and the session’s goal.
Choose the skill the play needs. Pass-and-move pairs naturally with teaching the pass and cut before combining a full five-player sequence.
