Players

2 to 12 players (working in pairs)

Equipment

1 basketball per pair

Space

Half court or around any available basket

Set it up

Divide players into pairs at one basket. Shooter starts 8 to 12 feet from the hoop in a comfortable range. Partner stands near the rim as passer and rebounder.

Run the activity

  1. The shooter shows two target hands and drops their hips into an athletic stance facing the rim.
  2. The partner delivers a crisp chest pass directly to the shooter's chest pocket.
  3. The shooter catches with balanced feet, rises straight up for a controlled shot, and holds their follow-through.
  4. The passer grabs the rebound. After 4 shots, partners swap roles immediately.
ONE CUE TO SAY OUT LOUD

“Feet down, hips loaded”

Watch for this

Catching the ball while upright and drifting sideways instead of establishing a firm base before the catch.

Make it easier

Move 3 feet closer to the basket and pause for one second after the catch to check balance before shooting.

Add a challenge

Add a quick one-step hop into the catch moving from left to right or right to left.
