Weak-side check and outlet read
Account for weak-side attackers when the shot comes from the opposite wing.

MAKE IT FIT YOUR GROUP
Coach the players in front of you.
Ages 15–18
Begin with controlled opposition and review legal contact. Increase uncertainty by changing the shot side, not by demanding harder collisions.
- Work & rest
- Three possessions per side, then rotate and recover before the next group of rebounds.
- Look for success
- Weak-side players remain accounted for and the securing defender makes a deliberate outlet decision.
3 attackers, 3 defenders and a coach shooter
One basketball, Basket, Pinnies
Half court with a wing shooting location and outlet space
Set it up
Start three matched pairs with one offensive player at the shooting wing and two away from the ball. The coach supplies a controlled shot or toss from that wing while the defense identifies its checks.
Run the activity
- At the shot cue, weak-side defenders find their own opponents and establish legal rebounding space before pursuing the flight.
- The nearest safe rebounder calls for the ball; partners protect space without holding or shoving attackers.
- Secure and land before looking upcourt. Find a visible outlet or hold and pivot when the first receiver is covered.
- End after a controlled offensive catch or defensive outlet. Rotate the shooting side and all matchups after three possessions.
“See the weak side before the ball drops.”
Watch for this
The far-side defender watches the shot and loses an attacker who is already moving toward the rebound.
Make it easier
Freeze on the shot cue and have every defender point out their assigned check before the toss.
Add a challenge
Add an outlet receiver with a guided defender so the rebounder must choose between a pass and a protected reset.
