Players

3 to 6 players per basket

Equipment

1 basketball, 2 cones

Space

Half court

Set it up

Place two cones at half court 15 feet apart to mark starting spots for two attackers. One defender sets up inside the top of the key facing them.

Run the activity

  1. The ball handler advances from halfway at controlled speed while the partner stays in a separate wide lane.
  2. The guided defender chooses whether to challenge the ball or protect the passing window, without initiating contact.
  3. Read the defender: take a balanced finish when the lane is clear or pass to the open partner. Slow down or reset when neither option is safe.
  4. End on a score, rebound, turnover or coach stop. Rotate all three roles each rep; with additional players rotate a new attacker in.
ONE CUE TO SAY OUT LOUD

“Freeze the helper, feed the open lane”

Watch for this

Attackers run too close together, allowing one defender to guard both players at once.

Make it easier

Require the defender to keep both hands behind their back to provide a clearer driving lane.

Add a challenge

Add a trailing defender starting three steps behind half court who pursues once the ball crosses the timeline.
