MAKE IT FIT YOUR GROUP

Coach the players in front of you.

Ages 12–14

Use an announced turn and short approach so stopping mechanics remain visible.

Ages 15–18

Add an unannounced side cue while preserving a clear braking zone and full walk-back.

Work & rest
Two trips each way, with a walk-back between every trip and a pause before changing sides.
Look for success
The player brakes before the target and leaves in the called direction without a late stumble.
Players

1 mover per station; coach directs the recovery

Equipment

Three flat markers

Space

A clear half-court movement station

Set it up

Place a start marker, a closeout marker several steps ahead and a recovery gate to one side. The closeout target is a marker, not a person. Walk the turn before increasing pace.

Run the activity

  1. Approach the closeout marker quickly enough to practice braking, then slow into a balanced stop before it.
  2. The coach points toward the recovery gate. Turn the hips to run into the open path rather than shuffling after it is already behind you.
  3. Slow again through the gate and walk outside the movement lane to reset.
  4. Complete two quality trips each way. End the set if the player can no longer stop before the marker.
ONE CUE TO SAY OUT LOUD

“Brake. See the exit. Turn and go.”

Watch for this

Leaning past the closeout marker, then trying to reverse direction from a falling position.

Make it easier

Announce the recovery side and use walking pace for both segments.

Add a challenge

Place a second recovery gate on the other side and reveal the choice only after the approach begins.
