Players

6 to 12 players divided into groups of 6 (3 offense, 3 defense)

Equipment

1 basketball per group of 6, 4 cones to mark half-court boundaries

Space

Half-court area

Set it up

Three offensive players start in the backcourt: a baseline inbounder, a guard at a short sideline receiving window and a middle receiver near the backcourt free-throw-line area. Three defenders provide light guided pressure.

Run the activity

  1. The guard changes direction to show a short entry window. The inbounder passes only when the guard is visible and open.
  2. After passing, the inbounder steps onto the court as the trailing return outlet. The middle receiver flashes into an open window ahead of the guard.
  3. The guard catches, pivots legally and looks to the middle receiver. If that window is closed, use the now-inbounds return outlet.
  4. Advance across halfway with another short pass only after a receiving window opens. Rotate offense and defense after two reps.
ONE CUE TO SAY OUT LOUD

“Wait for the window, catch with two hands”

Watch for this

Middle cutter runs immediately on the whistle before an opening exists, causing traffic jams and dangerous mid-court collisions.

Make it easier

Defenders play passive shadow defense without attempting steals, allowing passers to focus on timing and spacing.

Add a challenge

Allow defenders to fully contest passes and trap once the ball crosses the free-throw line extended.
