MAKE IT FIT YOUR GROUP

Coach the players in front of you.

Ages 9–11

Rehearse each segment alone and make the diamond small.

Ages 12–14

Increase the approach pace only while deceleration remains controlled; use both turn directions.

Work & rest
Two short trips, followed by an outside walk and a direction change.
Look for success
The player changes direction without stumbling or needing several emergency balance steps.
Players

1 moving player per clear diamond

Equipment

Four cones

Space

A small diamond with clear run-out beyond each turn

Set it up

Make a compact diamond. Name one forward segment, one sideways segment and one turn-and-run segment. Walk the pattern before adding speed and keep waiting players outside it.

Run the activity

  1. Move forward to the first cone, decelerating before changing direction.
  2. Use balanced lateral steps to the second cone, looking into the open path. Do not force a slide when a turn is needed.
  3. Turn the hips and run toward the third cone, then slow before returning to the start.
  4. Walk outside the diamond to reset. Repeat in the opposite direction after two trips, keeping the order of movements clear.
ONE CUE TO SAY OUT LOUD

“Slow to turn. Push into open space.”

Watch for this

Racing around the cones without ever controlling the direction changes.

Make it easier

Use walking and side-step segments with a full stop at every cone.

Add a challenge

Have the coach call the direction before the start; keep the movement order and lane clear.
