Players

Groups of 3

Equipment

1 basketball per trio, 4 cones per trio

Space

Quarter court or any 20x20 foot area

Set it up

Place four cones in a wide box, about 12 to 15 feet apart. Put three players at three cones, leaving one cone empty. One player starts with the ball.

Run the activity

  1. The player with the basketball steps toward a teammate and throws a crisp chest pass.
  2. Immediately after releasing the ball, the passer sprints to the open cone that has no player.
  3. The receiver catches with two hands, pivots into an athletic stance, and passes to the remaining teammate before sprinting to the new open spot.
  4. Continue passing and rotating continuously for 45 seconds, then rest for 15 seconds.
ONE CUE TO SAY OUT LOUD

“Step, snap your wrists, and relocate on balance.”

Watch for this

Passing while running instead of planting feet, causing wild or off-target throws.

Make it easier

Shorten the passing distance between cones to 8 to 10 feet and allow players to use bounce passes only.

Add a challenge

With a fourth player, add a defender in the middle of the box to read and intercept passes. Rotate the defender after each short round.
