MAKE IT FIT YOUR GROUP

Coach the players in front of you.

Ages 9–11

Start at walking pace with stopped catches, then shorten the pass distance before adding speed.

Ages 12–14

Use controlled running and a legal release on each catch. Stop the set when passing accuracy breaks down.

Work & rest
Two short trips, each followed by an outside walk-back, then rotate and rest before the next pair.
Look for success
The group holds its spacing and completes catchable passes without traveling or crossing lanes.
Players

3 in separate running lanes

Equipment

One basketball, Six lane markers

Space

A clear half court or short three-lane runway

Set it up

Mark left, middle and right lanes. Players start level with comfortable passing distances. They stay in their own lanes rather than weaving across one another, and walk back outside the runway.

Run the activity

  1. The middle player passes to one side, and all three move forward at a controlled pace.
  2. The outside receiver returns the ball toward the middle; the next pass goes to the other side. Release each pass before taking extra steps with the ball.
  3. Stop at the finish markers and gather the ball. Do not add a rushed shot at the end of an untidy trip.
  4. Walk outside the lanes to reset and change the middle player after two trips. Rest before beginning another set.
ONE CUE TO SAY OUT LOUD

“Stay wide. Pass ahead. Keep control.”

Watch for this

Running faster than the receivers can catch and legally release the next pass.

Make it easier

Walk the pattern with a complete stop at each catch.

Add a challenge

Add a controlled layup after the last pass, with the other two players staying out of the landing space.
