Players

Pairs (2 to 12 players)

Equipment

1 basketball per pair

Space

Half court or full court baseline to perimeter

Set it up

Partners stand 15 feet apart in a clear half-court lane. One holds the ball; the defender begins facing them. Leave room to stop without touching the ball holder.

Run the activity

  1. The offensive partner yells 'Go' and holds the basketball in a triple-threat stance.
  2. The defender sprints two-thirds of the distance toward the ball handler in a low stance.
  3. The defender decelerates with fast, choppy feet, ending with hips back, one hand contesting high, and one hand low to mirror the ball.
  4. The offensive player sweeps the ball side to side for 3 seconds; the defender slides laterally while staying balanced before partners switch.
ONE CUE TO SAY OUT LOUD

“Sprint hard, chop fast, sit down low.”

Watch for this

Lunging forward on straight legs, leaving the defender off-balance and easy to blow by off the dribble.

Make it easier

Perform the closeout without a live sweep from the offense, allowing the defender to simply freeze in a balanced stance.

Add a challenge

The ball handler can make 1 live dribble left or right, forcing the defender to immediately push off and slide to cut off the lane.
