Players

6 to 9 players (groups of 6)

Equipment

1 basketball per group, Pinnies to distinguish offense and defense

Space

Half court inside the 3-point line

Set it up

Set 3 defenders in a triangle zone inside the key. Position 1 offensive passer on the wing and 2 offensive receivers flashing between the defenders.

Run the activity

  1. The wing passer holds the ball while the two receivers flash into open spaces between the zone defenders without standing still.
  2. Receivers show hands and call for the ball in the open passing window; defenders use active hands but do not leave their zone areas.
  3. The passer delivers a firm chest or bounce pass to the open player, who catches, pivots, and returns the ball to the wing to reset.
ONE CUE TO SAY OUT LOUD

“Find the gap, show your hands”

Watch for this

Standing directly behind a defender instead of stepping two feet into the open space between them.

Make it easier

Instruct defenders to keep their hands down and remain stationary to make the passing windows obvious.

Add a challenge

Add a third receiver and allow the defense to contest passes with full active hands and deflection attempts.
