MAKE IT FIT YOUR GROUP

Coach the players in front of you.

Ages 9–11

Walk through the find-and-turn without a ball first. The attacker remains cooperative.

Ages 12–14

Change the shot location and starting matchups, keeping rebounding contact controlled and legal.

Work & rest
Two controlled tosses, then swap offense and defense and discuss one successful check.
Look for success
Every defender can name the opponent they located before pursuing the ball.
Players

3 attackers, 3 rebound defenders and a coach tosser

Equipment

One basketball, Basket, Pinnies

Space

Half court around one key

Set it up

Match three pairs around the key, with defenders between their attacker and the basket. A coach holds the ball near the free-throw line. Start with guided movement and no pushing.

Run the activity

  1. On the coach’s shot cue, each defender first identifies their own attacker rather than staring only at the ball.
  2. Establish legal space using a balanced stance. Do not hold, back into or extend elbows at the opponent.
  3. When the coach sends a reachable rebound, pursue it safely. One teammate calls for it so defenders do not jump into each other.
  4. Freeze after the catch to identify who found their check, then swap roles after two tosses.
ONE CUE TO SAY OUT LOUD

“Find your player, then find the ball.”

Watch for this

All three defenders chasing the toss immediately and leaving their assigned attackers unaccounted for.

Make it easier

Use one pair at a time while the other players watch the find-turn-catch sequence.

Add a challenge

Let attackers vary their starting spot and add light live pursuit after legal space is established.
