On-ball defense / 9 MINUTES
Two starts, two complete stops
Carry the same containing habits into two different attacking angles.

Half court · attack ↑Motion is off with your reduced-motion preference. The setup and action paths show the rep.
MAKE IT FIT YOUR GROUP
Coach the players in front of you.
Ages 15–18
Use two quality possessions rather than an unlimited “stay until you win” sequence. Stop when movement becomes uncontrolled.
- Work & rest
- Two separate possessions per defensive turn, then rotate and recover.
- Look for success
- The defender keeps a useful stance and follows each different starting angle through to the rebound.
1 defender and 2 attackers alternating turns
One basketball, Basket, Two perimeter markers
Half court with a wing and opposite-corner start
Set it up
One attacker waits on a wing and the other in the opposite corner. A defender begins inside the lane. Only one attacker is live at a time; the waiting player stays outside the rep.
Run the activity
- Begin the first possession from the wing. The defender closes under control and plays through a secure rebound or coach stop.
- Return the ball and reset all bodies before the next attacker starts from the opposite corner. Do not launch the second rep into the first player’s landing area.
- The defender applies the same team rule from the new angle, contesting without undercutting and finishing the rebound.
- Rotate the defender after these two possessions regardless of the score. Briefly identify which angle caused the harder recovery.
“New angle. Same balance. Finish it.”
Watch for this
Starting the second attacker too early or making the defender stay until exhausted enough to lose safe footwork.
Make it easier
Use guided attacks and announce the first move at each starting spot.
Add a challenge
Change the order of the two starts or let the attacker choose between a shot and a controlled drive.
