MAKE IT FIT YOUR GROUP

Coach the players in front of you.

Ages 9–11

Use walking approaches and a very short toss; teach the legal catch before asking for a shot.

Ages 12–14

Mix the approach direction. Increase pace only while the catch and landing remain repeatable.

Work & rest
Three attempts from each approach, with a walk-back reset between shots.
Look for success
The player catches on balance and reaches the shot without a late extra foot shuffle.
Players

1 per clear shooting station

Equipment

One basketball, Basket, One floor marker

Space

A clear wing area inside the player’s shooting range

Set it up

Mark a comfortable wing shooting spot. Start two walking steps to its side with a ball. Leave the rebound path clear and keep other stations outside it.

Run the activity

  1. Make a short, gentle backspin toss into the marked receiving space; keep it close enough to catch comfortably.
  2. Step toward the ball and turn the body toward the basket while making a legal, balanced catch.
  3. Shoot from settled feet without adding an extra shuffle. Rebound and walk back outside the landing area.
  4. Complete three attempts from one approach, rest briefly, then approach the same spot from the other direction.
ONE CUE TO SAY OUT LOUD

“Arrive facing the target.”

Watch for this

Tossing too far ahead and rushing several adjustment steps after catching.

Make it easier

Have a coach place a soft pass at the spot and rehearse the catch without shooting first.

Add a challenge

Vary the approach angle while keeping the shooting spot and range unchanged.
