MAKE IT FIT YOUR GROUP

Coach the players in front of you.

Ages 12–14

Announce the closing angle and rehearse the outlet’s spacing before live play.

Ages 15–18

Mix closeout angles and help decisions. Review whether the first choice preserved an advantage.

Work & rest
Three single-shot possessions, then rotate and recover while the coach resets.
Look for success
The offense identifies the initial space and keeps a reachable passing outlet when the lane closes.
Players

2 attackers and 2 defenders; coach starts the pass

Equipment

One basketball, Basket, Two receiving markers

Space

Half court with a wing and opposite outlet

Set it up

Place attackers on a wing and the opposite perimeter. One defender starts inside the lane to close to the wing; the other guards the outlet. The coach passes from the top to begin.

Run the activity

  1. On the coach’s pass, the first defender closes under control and leaves safe landing space.
  2. The receiver reads shot, drive or pass. The outlet moves only enough to remain a visible target without crowding the driver.
  3. The second defender chooses how much help the ball needs while staying aware of the outlet. Play through one shot and controlled rebound.
  4. Reset after each possession and rotate roles after three. Review the first decision, not just the final basket.
ONE CUE TO SAY OUT LOUD

“See the arrival. Keep an outlet.”

Watch for this

The outlet cutting into the driving lane as the handler tries to attack it.

Make it easier

Guide the closeout and let the second defender stay with the outlet.

Add a challenge

Vary the first pass and let both defenders play live from different closing angles.
