MAKE IT FIT YOUR GROUP

Coach the players in front of you.

Ages 15–18

Use controlled opponents of suitable size and your team’s pressure rules. A retreat or safe outlet is a successful decision.

Work & rest
One short possession, then rotate; stop a rep that becomes prolonged wrestling or repeated contact.
Look for success
The handler recognizes the helper early and preserves space or chooses a safe reset.
Players

3: handler and two controlled pressure defenders

Equipment

One basketball, Four boundary markers

Space

A wide backcourt channel with clear retreat space

Set it up

Start a handler in the backcourt with one defender ahead and a second helper off to a side. Mark a wide channel and an exit line. The coach controls the pressure and stops unsafe contact.

Run the activity

  1. The first defender contains while the second shows help from one side. Begin with guided pressure, not a surprise body trap.
  2. The handler keeps a live dribble and uses width, pace or a retreat to avoid the two bodies closing together.
  3. Cross the exit line only when a clear lane exists. If neither lane is available, retreat into space and let the coach reset.
  4. Stop on a pickup, turnover, exit or coach call. Rotate all three roles after every short rep.
ONE CUE TO SAY OUT LOUD

“See the second defender before the trap.”

Watch for this

Treating every double-team as an invitation to split two defenders who have already closed the gap.

Make it easier

Have the second defender show help without closing the lane; widen the channel.

Add a challenge

Add an outlet teammate so the handler can choose a visible pass instead of having to dribble out.
