MAKE IT FIT YOUR GROUP

Coach the players in front of you.

Ages 12–14

Rehearse the landing cushion and stop signal before allowing the attacker a live choice.

Ages 15–18

Vary the catch and closing angle; track a complete stop rather than giving credit for merely touching the ball.

Work & rest
Two possessions, then change roles and recover while the coach resets.
Look for success
The defender slows on arrival, contains the first move and follows the shot into a legal rebound.
Players

2 players and a coach passer

Equipment

One basketball, Basket, One wing marker

Space

One side of a half court with a clear landing area

Set it up

Put an attacker on a wing and a defender near the paint. The coach passes from the top. The attacker has a two-dribble limit after the catch; the defender leaves a safe landing cushion.

Run the activity

  1. As the coach passes, the defender closes the distance and slows before arriving at the shooter.
  2. The attacker chooses a balanced shot or up to two controlled dribbles into available space. The defender contains without reaching across the body.
  3. Play through the shot and a controlled rebound, or stop on a turnover or coach call. No undercutting or charging through a closed lane.
  4. Switch jobs after two possessions and repeat on the other wing, using the same defensive rule.
ONE CUE TO SAY OUT LOUD

“Arrive balanced. Finish the stop.”

Watch for this

Winning the first closeout but relaxing as soon as the shot leaves the attacker’s hands.

Make it easier

Start with a shot fake and one planned dribble at guided speed.

Add a challenge

Vary the passer’s position so the defender must read a different closing angle.
