MAKE IT FIT YOUR GROUP

Coach the players in front of you.

Ages 9–11

Freeze after the catch and identify the pivot foot together before turning.

Ages 12–14

Vary the approach angle and reduce the pause only when the legal catch remains consistent.

Work & rest
Four catches per receiver, then rotate; walk between stations to reset.
Look for success
The receiver can describe their legal stop and pivot before releasing an accurate pass.
Players

1 receiver and 2 partners rotating roles

Equipment

One basketball, Three floor markers

Space

A wide triangle with comfortable passing distances

Set it up

Place two partners on wide passing spots and a receiver approaching a middle marker from the side. Leave space around the receiver for a controlled stop and turn.

Run the activity

  1. The first partner passes softly as the receiver approaches the middle spot at walking pace.
  2. The receiver catches with legal footwork, settles and identifies the pivot foot before turning.
  3. Pivot to face the other partner and deliver a controlled pass without shuffling or lifting into a new dribble.
  4. Follow the pass to rotate stations. Rehearse from both approach directions and reset immediately after a traveling violation.
ONE CUE TO SAY OUT LOUD

“Catch in balance. Turn to a window.”

Watch for this

Turning before controlling the catch, then adding a shuffle to regain balance.

Make it easier

Start the receiver stationary and rehearse the pivot and pass before adding the approach.

Add a challenge

Add a guided defender shading one side so the receiver must choose a different legal pivot.
