MAKE IT FIT YOUR GROUP

Coach the players in front of you.

Ages 6–8

Start without a ball and use small turns; demonstrate each direction.

Ages 9–11

Add the ball and a passing target. Reset fully before changing the pivot foot.

Work & rest
Three gentle turns, then release the ball, reset the stance and change the planted foot.
Look for success
The player can name the pivot foot and turn without sliding it or switching feet.
Players

1 per personal pivot station; coach calls targets

Equipment

One suitable basketball, Four flat target markers

Space

A clear personal circle with no defenders

Set it up

Place four named or numbered targets around a player. Begin with no ball so the coach can demonstrate the planted pivot foot. Add a held ball only after the turn is understood.

Run the activity

  1. Settle into a comfortable stance and name the foot that will stay on the floor for this turn.
  2. The coach calls a nearby target. Turn the free foot and body toward it while the pivot foot stays in place.
  3. Show a balanced passing position, then return under control without dragging the pivot foot.
  4. After three calls, reset both feet and choose the other pivot foot for a new set. Do not switch pivot feet while holding the ball.
ONE CUE TO SAY OUT LOUD

“One foot stays. Turn to see.”

Watch for this

Changing the planted foot halfway through the turn or twisting the knee while the body is off balance.

Make it easier

Use one small quarter-turn without a ball and copy the coach.

Add a challenge

Add a short pass to a partner after turning; release before lifting the pivot foot to begin a dribble.
