MAKE IT FIT YOUR GROUP

Coach the players in front of you.

Ages 15–18

Judge the catch and first move under your competition’s rules. Reward a sound return pass when no advantage is available.

Work & rest
Two short possessions per role, then rotate and recover during the next pair.
Look for success
The attacker finds a useful response while maintaining the established pivot and a legal dribble start.
Players

1 attacker, 1 guided defender and 1 passer

Equipment

One basketball, Basket, Wing marker

Space

Half court with a clear wing and landing area

Set it up

Put an attacker on the wing, a defender a safe step away and a passer at the top. Agree on guided contact limits and a short two-dribble attack after the catch.

Run the activity

  1. Catch legally, establish the pivot foot and face the basket with the ball protected.
  2. Use a short jab or shot preparation to read the defender’s balance; keep the pivot planted while holding the ball.
  3. Choose the available shot, a legal dribble start or a return pass. A counter changes the free foot’s direction, not the established pivot foot.
  4. Finish the possession under control, reset and rotate after two reps. Review the first move before discussing whether the shot went in.
ONE CUE TO SAY OUT LOUD

“Read the feet. Keep your pivot.”

Watch for this

Using a flashy counter that quietly switches the pivot foot or starts the dribble too late.

Make it easier

Announce the defender’s reaction and freeze before the attacker chooses the response.

Add a challenge

Let the defender vary the reaction while the passer remains available as an outlet.
