Change speed into a window

Use a real change of pace to reach space rather than repeating a move at every cone.

MAKE IT FIT YOUR GROUP

Coach the players in front of you.

Ages 12–14

Keep the defender as a predictable shadow until the handler can slow without losing the dribble.

Ages 15–18

Allow a late shade and a reset option; evaluate the change of speed against the actual defender.

Work & rest
Two trips, then change roles and recover before the next handling turn.
Look for success
The handler slows to read, changes body speed, and exits through space without contact.
Players

2: dribbler and guided shadow defender

Equipment

One basketball, Three cones

Space

A broad sideline-to-middle channel with two exit windows

Set it up

Start the handler below a center marker. A guided defender waits several steps ahead and shades one exit; two cones mark separated left and right windows.

Run the activity

  1. Approach the defender at a controlled pace, keeping a live dribble and a clear view of both exits.
  2. When the defender shades one side, lower the hips and accelerate toward the open window without running through their body.
  3. Decelerate after the window, keep the dribble controlled, then gather to end the rep. Reset if both exits close.
  4. Switch roles after two trips. Give the next handler a different shade so the change of speed answers a real cue.
ONE CUE TO SAY OUT LOUD

“Slow enough to see. Quick into space.”

Watch for this

Making a faster dribble with the hands while the body continues at exactly the same pace.

Make it easier

Use a coach pointing to the open exit, with no defender in the channel.

Add a challenge

Let the defender recover at controlled speed while preserving a safe stopping area beyond the gate.
