Players

Pairs or groups of 3: 2–12 players

Equipment

1 basketball per group, 2 cones per group

Space

Half court

Set it up

Set two perimeter cones at each shooter’s comfortable range. In a pair, the shooter starts with the ball at one cone and the partner waits as the passer. In a group of three, the third player rebounds. Use separate safe stations for additional groups.

Run the activity

  1. The shooter passes to the partner, then relocates toward the second cone to show a clear receiving window.
  2. The partner waits until the shooter is ready and returns an accurate pass.
  3. The shooter catches with balanced feet and takes a controlled shot. If their comfortable range is closer, move both cones in.
  4. In pairs, the passer rebounds and roles switch after four shots. In threes, rotate shooter, passer and rebounder after each shot.
ONE CUE TO SAY OUT LOUD

“Stop feet before the hands meet”

Watch for this

Catching the ball while still running, which causes fading and off-balance shooting mechanics.

Make it easier

Shorten the relocation distance to just two steps and allow a gentle set shot from 10 feet away.

Add a challenge

Add a guided defender who jogs toward the shooter with an outstretched hand without attempting to block the ball.
