Rip, step, release the dribble
Start an attack from a legal catch without lifting the pivot foot before releasing the dribble.

MAKE IT FIT YOUR GROUP
Coach the players in front of you.
Ages 12–14
Teach the release and first step slowly, then join the drive. Use the rules of the player’s league.
Ages 15–18
Vary the pass and guided closeout angle; the legal first move must survive the faster read.
- Work & rest
- Three attempts per role with a walk-back, then swap and change the receiving side.
- Look for success
- The coach can see the ball released before the pivot foot lifts on each dribble start.

A clear wing approach and driving lane
Set it up
A passer sends the ball to a stationary wing receiver. Rehearse the catch and identify the pivot foot before adding a drive. Use a clear lane with no live defender initially.
Run the activity
- Catch on balance and identify which foot is the pivot under the player’s catch and local rules.
- Face the basket, protect the ball close to the body and choose an open driving side. Do not swing elbows into imaginary contact.
- Release the dribble before lifting the pivot foot to start the drive. Use one or two controlled dribbles, then stop or finish legally.
- Return outside the lane and swap after three attempts. Repeat from the other side with the coach watching the first release.
“Ball down before the pivot comes up.”
Watch for this
Jabbing, lifting the pivot foot and only then starting the dribble.
Make it easier
Freeze the sequence after the ball leaves the hand, then complete the first step slowly.
Add a challenge
Add a guided closeout defender who leaves a clear side; preserve the same legal first move.
