MAKE IT FIT YOUR GROUP

Coach the players in front of you.

Ages 9–11

Announce the drive and use a walking demonstration. Keep the first stage as a help-and-return rehearsal.

Ages 12–14

Mix the first defender’s success. Reward staying attached when no help is needed.

Work & rest
Two guided possessions, then rotate and discuss one help-or-stay decision.
Look for success
The helper covers a real gap early and recovers to the receiver without a collision.
Players

2 attackers and 2 matched defenders

Equipment

One basketball, Basket, Two perimeter markers

Space

Half court with a wing and opposite receiving window

Set it up

Start one attacker on a wing with a guided on-ball defender. A second attacker waits opposite with their own defender inside. The coach announces a controlled drive; establish clear stopping space.

Run the activity

  1. The wing takes one controlled dribble past the first defender’s shoulder. The second defender moves into the open lane early, without charging into the driver.
  2. The driver stops under control and passes to the opposite receiver. No airborne rescue passes are required.
  3. The helper moves out with the pass and closes to their own player’s hands with a safe cushion. The first defender regains their original matchup.
  4. Freeze at the catch, then rotate after two reps. Later mix a contained drive so the helper learns when to stay home.
ONE CUE TO SAY OUT LOUD

“Help the gap. Recover on the pass.”

Watch for this

Helping even when the first defender still contains the ball, or waiting for the catch before recovering.

Make it easier

Walk through the announced drive and kick-out with no shot or live contest.

Add a challenge

Mix contained and beaten drives; let the helper decide whether a lane actually needs covering.
