MAKE IT FIT YOUR GROUP

Coach the players in front of you.

Ages 6–8

Teach awareness of one matchup. Keep this a walking game without trapping, stealing or zone assignments.

Work & rest
Three slow passes, then rotate and reset the matchups.
Look for success
The defender can identify both the ball and their assigned player at each freeze.
Players

2 gentle passers and 1 shadow defender

Equipment

One soft or suitable basketball, Three floor markers

Space

A small triangle with comfortable passing distances

Set it up

Put two passers on wide markers and a defender a few steps inside the player being guarded. Name that matchup clearly. This is a slow awareness activity, with no steals or contact.

Run the activity

  1. The defender points briefly toward the ball and toward their own player, then keeps both in view without holding the arms across anyone.
  2. The passers exchange a gentle pass. The defender takes a small adjustment step toward their assigned player when that player receives it.
  3. Freeze and ask the defender to name who has the ball and who they are guarding. Give time to turn and look.
  4. After three passes, rotate the defender. Keep the distances small enough that every pass arrives comfortably.
ONE CUE TO SAY OUT LOUD

“Find the ball. Find your buddy.”

Watch for this

Watching only the ball and forgetting which player belongs to the defender.

Make it easier

Let a coach hold the ball and move it slowly while the assigned player stays still.

Add a challenge

Let the assigned player take one walking step into a new receiving space before the next pass.
