MAKE IT FIT YOUR GROUP

Coach the players in front of you.

Ages 6–8

Choose the ball and target for this child. A six-year-old may begin with a soft ball and a low wall target.

Work & rest
Five attempts, then a short reset; use the five minutes for several relaxed rounds.
Look for success
The player can repeat a balanced release without twisting or throwing from the chest.
Players

1 shooter; coach or adult retrieves misses

Equipment

Child-sized basketball, Lowered basket or safe wall target

Space

One clear shooting station close to a basket

Set it up

Begin a few steps from a lowered basket. If the player cannot reach comfortably, use a reachable wall spot instead. Give each shooter a separate clear station.

Run the activity

  1. Start with feet settled and the ball held comfortably in front of the body. Look at the target before moving.
  2. Lift and release toward the target, letting the guide hand support rather than shove the ball sideways.
  3. Hold the finish long enough for the coach to notice the balance. Collect the ball only when the shooting area is clear.
  4. Take five relaxed attempts, name one thing that felt repeatable, then rest or swap stations.
ONE CUE TO SAY OUT LOUD

“Get close. Lift. Finish tall.”

Watch for this

Moving the player back after a make even though the next shot needs a full-body heave.

Make it easier

Start with a soft toss to a low wall target; keep both feet comfortably on the floor.

Add a challenge

After several balanced attempts, take one small step back while preserving the same comfortable motion.
