MAKE IT FIT YOUR GROUP

Coach the players in front of you.

Ages 9–11

Use one announced exit and a cooperative dribbler. Teach turning to recover before making the rep competitive.

Ages 12–14

Vary the attacker’s pace and first step. Keep the chosen containing rule clear rather than switching it mid-rep.

Work & rest
Two short trips, then swap; reset the gate before changing the protected side.
Look for success
The defender can explain the exit being protected and recover without a desperate reach.
Players

1 attacker and 1 guided defender

Equipment

One basketball, Four cones

Space

A wide channel with a marked finish gate

Set it up

Mark a wide approach lane and a finish gate. The coach names the exit the defender is protecting. Begin with guided dribbling and a clear stopping buffer.

Run the activity

  1. The attacker approaches at controlled speed and tries to find space toward the finish gate.
  2. The defender sets an angle consistent with the coach’s chosen exit, without steering the attacker by contact.
  3. If beaten, turn and recover toward the next safe containing position instead of crossing in front of the runner at the last instant.
  4. Stop after the gate, pickup or coach call. Switch roles after two trips and use the other side.
ONE CUE TO SAY OUT LOUD

“Protect space with your feet.”

Watch for this

Continuing to slide after the attacker has passed the shoulder, then lunging or reaching to recover.

Make it easier

Announce the attacker’s first direction and widen the stopping buffer.

Add a challenge

Let the attacker choose a change of pace while the defender keeps the same containing task.
