MAKE IT FIT YOUR GROUP
Coach the players in front of you.
Ages 15–18
Start below full speed. The shadow must preserve space; stop and reset immediately when a lane closes.
- Work & rest
- Three brief attempts per role, with an outside walk-back and reset after every attempt.
- Look for success
- The attacker reacts to the actual gap and both players finish with controlled deceleration.
1 attacker and 1 non-contact shadow defender
Four flat markers
A broad starting lane with two separated exit gates
Set it up
Set two exit gates ahead of an attacker and a shadow defender, leaving a generous cushion between them. Establish no-contact rules and a buffer beyond both exits. There is no ball.
Run the activity
- The attacker begins a controlled approach and reads which exit the shadow defender leaves more open.
- The defender may adjust toward an exit but cannot grab, block by contact or sprint through the attacker’s path.
- The attacker chooses one change of pace or direction into available space; both slow before the run-out ends.
- Reset after each attempt and switch roles after three. Discuss whether the choice used open space rather than just beating a stopwatch.
“Read the space. Own the stop.”
Watch for this
Choosing the gate before reading the defender or chasing a closing gap into contact.
Make it easier
Announce which gate the defender will shade, and lower the approach speed.
Add a challenge
Let the defender change the shaded gate once before the attacker commits; keep the stopping buffer unchanged.
