MAKE IT FIT YOUR GROUP

Coach the players in front of you.

Ages 9–11

Begin with guided defense and one named cutting opportunity; keep the bonus simple.

Ages 12–14

Play live denial and reward a sound decision to keep or reverse the ball when the cut is covered.

Work & rest
Three possessions per attacking turn, then change roles and reset the spacing.
Look for success
The group creates at least one real receiving window and recognizes when a cut is covered.

Space

Half court with clear passing and cutting space

Set it up

Begin with three spaced attackers and matched defenders. Normal baskets count normally. Add one bonus point for a controlled catch from a well-timed basket cut, whether or not the next shot goes in.

Run the activity

  1. Start each possession from a checked ball and let the offense read the defender before choosing a cut.
  2. After passing, move into a new window or cut when the path is open. Teammates leave the lane clear rather than following the same route.
  3. The passer uses a visible target and keeps the ball if the defender closes the window. A bonus requires a controlled catch, not merely running through the lane.
  4. Play three possessions, then switch roles and briefly identify an open cut and one pass wisely withheld.
ONE CUE TO SAY OUT LOUD

“Cut into space. Pass to a window.”

Watch for this

Forcing a cutter pass to chase the bonus even when a defender has already closed the lane.

Make it easier

Walk the first cut against guided defenders before beginning a live possession.

Add a challenge

Let defenders deny a perimeter receiver so the offense can read a backdoor opportunity.
