MAKE IT FIT YOUR GROUP

Coach the players in front of you.

Ages 6–8

Use a walk and a generous gap; the no-steal rule keeps attention on movement.

Ages 9–11

Add one controlled direction change and ask the defender to turn and recover when sliding is no longer enough.

Work & rest
One short trip per role, followed by an outside walk-back and a brief reset.
Look for success
The defender can follow a change of direction and finish with space rather than a body stop.
Players

2 per wide channel

Equipment

One suitable basketball, Four boundary markers

Space

A short, wide dribbling channel

Set it up

Place a dribbler at one end of a wide channel and a defender several steps ahead. The defender shadows without stealing. Leave clear space beyond the finish marker.

Run the activity

  1. The attacker walks forward with a controlled dribble and may angle gently within the channel.
  2. The defender keeps the ball in view and moves with a balanced base, allowing room to slow and stop.
  3. End at the finish marker or whenever either player loses control. A loose ball stops the pair immediately.
  4. Switch roles after each trip and name one moment when the defender moved early enough to keep the cushion.
ONE CUE TO SAY OUT LOUD

“Stay in view. Keep your space.”

Watch for this

Chasing the ball with the hands instead of moving early with the body.

Make it easier

Use a walking attacker holding a ball while the pair learns the spacing; that walk-through is a separate rep.

Add a challenge

Let the attacker choose one gentle change of direction while the defender continues without steals.
