MAKE IT FIT YOUR GROUP
Coach the players in front of you.
Ages 6–8
Keep the pace low and leave the ball out until the child can stop comfortably. Do not turn this into a jumping contest.
- Work & rest
- Four short turns with a walk-back between them, then a relaxed demonstration and reset.
- Look for success
- The child stops softly and holds balance without an extra recovery step.
1 or more in separate personal lanes
Two flat markers per lane
A short clear lane with room to stop
Set it up
Give every child a personal lane with a start and a stopping area. Demonstrate three walking steps followed by a gentle two-foot landing, without a ball and without jumping for height.
Run the activity
- Begin with three easy walking steps toward the stop area.
- Land softly on two feet with comfortable bent knees, keeping the body upright and space around the feet.
- Hold the “statue” for a moment, then relax and walk back outside the lane.
- After four turns, ask the child to show the coach their most balanced stop. Only add a ball in a later separate progression.
“Soft feet. Quiet statue.”
Watch for this
Leaping high or racing into the stop so the child falls forward.
Make it easier
Start with one small step into a settled two-foot stance.
Add a challenge
Walk while dribbling, then rehearse a legal gather and two-foot stop with the coach watching the feet.
