Players

Pairs or small groups of 3

Equipment

1 basketball per player, 4 cones in a straight line

Space

Half court sideline to sideline or baseline to midcourt

Set it up

Set four cones in a straight line 8 feet apart down the floor. Players line up at the baseline with a basketball.

Run the activity

  1. The ball handler dribbles slowly toward the first cone, keeping knees bent and the ball below waist height. Send the next player only when there is a clear gap.
  2. Just before reaching the cone, the player drops their hips, pounds the basketball hard, and bursts past the cone in two fast dribbles.
  3. At the second cone, the player slows under control without picking up the ball or placing a hand underneath it.
  4. Repeat the slow-to-fast sequence through the remaining cones, then jog back along the sideline using the opposite hand.
ONE CUE TO SAY OUT LOUD

“Slow crawl, quick drop”

Watch for this

Player runs at one steady speed throughout the entire lane without creating a noticeable change in rhythm.

Make it easier

Use only two cones spaced farther apart so players only need to perform one burst and one deceleration per rep.

Add a challenge

A partner stands safely beside the lane and flashes fingers. The dribbler calls out the number while changing speed with eyes up.
