MAKE IT FIT YOUR GROUP

Coach the players in front of you.

Ages 12–14

Use predictable low tosses to the side before introducing an unannounced direction.

Ages 15–18

Mix rebound locations and outlet denial, rewarding a protected hold when the first pass is covered.

Work & rest
Two rebounds per matchup, then change jobs and reset the space.
Look for success
The rebounder adjusts to the wider flight, lands under control and sees the outlet before passing.
Players

2 attackers, 2 defenders and a coach tosser/outlet

Equipment

One basketball, Basket, Two perimeter markers

Space

Half court with space beyond the paint

Set it up

Place one attacker and defender on each side of the lane. The coach stands outside the key and sends controlled rebounds that may travel wider than the paint.

Run the activity

  1. Defenders locate their check on the shot cue, then read the ball’s flight rather than assuming it will fall at the rim.
  2. Move to the wider rebound without running through another player. A teammate calls who is pursuing and who is covering space.
  3. After a secure catch and balanced landing, pivot to see the coach’s outlet target. Pass only through a clear window.
  4. Stop on the outlet or offensive catch. Rotate the pairs after two rebounds and change the side of the toss.
ONE CUE TO SAY OUT LOUD

“Track wide. Secure first. See the outlet.”

Watch for this

Turning to throw an outlet before possession is secure, or both defenders chasing the same long bounce.

Make it easier

Tell the group which side will receive the toss and use guided attackers.

Add a challenge

Let the coach vary the rebound side and add a controlled denial of the first outlet window.
