MAKE IT FIT YOUR GROUP

Coach the players in front of you.

Ages 6–8

Use short bounce passes and a modest shared goal; an adult may partner a new catcher.

Ages 9–11

Let each pair choose its own useful distance and compare their control between rounds.

Work & rest
About 30 seconds of relaxed passing, then a group pause to count and adjust. Use shorter rounds for new catchers.
Look for success
Every pair contributes controlled passes without racing or losing points for mistakes.
Players

2 or more pairs, each with their own gate

Equipment

One suitable ball per pair, Two flat markers per gate

Space

Several separate short passing lanes

Set it up

Each pair stands on opposite sides of a wide marker gate. The team chooses a small collective target of controlled gate passes. Keep distances individual and passing lanes separate.

Run the activity

  1. Show ready hands, step toward the target and send a gentle bounce or chest pass through the pair’s gate.
  2. The receiver controls the catch before returning the ball. Count one point for a pass both partners can manage in balance.
  3. A miss simply starts the next attempt; keep the team’s existing points and retrieve only within the pair’s own clear lane.
  4. After a short round, pause to share the total and adjust gate width or distance so every pair can contribute.
ONE CUE TO SAY OUT LOUD

“Make the next catch easy.”

Watch for this

Narrowing the gate or lengthening the pass until newer players stop contributing to the team goal.

Make it easier

Use a wider gate, shorter distance or soft bounce pass.

Add a challenge

Let a pair move one small step farther apart only while both partners keep comfortable, accurate catches.
