Players

Pairs: 2–12 players

Equipment

1 basketball per pair, 2 cones per pair

Space

Sideline area or quarter-court channel

Set it up

Set two cones along the sideline 15 feet apart. One dribbler starts at the first cone facing forward; one defender begins 3 feet in front as a guided shadow.

Run the activity

  1. Dribbler attacks forward toward the second cone with active pace while keeping head up.
  2. On the coach's call 'Trap', defender steps in to cut off the baseline angle with hands wide and no contact.
  3. Dribbler immediately pushes off the front foot, takes two low retreat dribbles backward with off-arm protecting the ball, then crosses over to escape into open space.
  4. Switch roles every three repetitions per pair.
ONE CUE TO SAY OUT LOUD

“Drop low, back up two steps, change lanes”

Watch for this

Stopping the dribble completely when pressure arrives, leaving the ball handler trapped with nowhere to turn.

Make it easier

Remove the live defender and have the dribbler react to a coach's verbal command against a static cone.

Add a challenge

Defender actively jumps into the dribbler's path with hands up, forcing an immediate retreat and quick crossover into a drive to the hoop.
