MAKE IT FIT YOUR GROUP

Coach the players in front of you.

Ages 6–8

A coach can toss while the child catches from a low, predictable bounce; keep jumping optional.

Ages 9–11

Add a small change in rebound angle and ask the catcher to move toward the ball before securing it.

Work & rest
Three catches per job, then switch; use the changeover to reset the landing space.
Look for success
The catcher follows the new angle off the board and holds the ball before returning it.
Players

2 partners: gentle tosser and catcher

Equipment

One suitable basketball, Basket and backboard

Space

One basket with a clear rebound landing space

Set it up

A catcher stands beside the rim with room to land. The partner stands several steps away on the same side and makes a gentle backboard toss. Keep all other players clear.

Run the activity

  1. Agree on a small, reachable toss. The catcher watches the board and takes a step into the expected landing area.
  2. Catch with two hands at a comfortable height and land or settle with the ball protected near the body.
  3. The tosser stays outside the catcher’s path. Return the ball only after both players are ready.
  4. Switch jobs after three catches, then move to the other side. Lower the toss whenever the receiver loses balance.
ONE CUE TO SAY OUT LOUD

“See the bounce. Meet it with two hands.”

Watch for this

The tosser runs under the rebounder or sends the ball high enough to create a desperate jump.

Make it easier

Use a coach’s gentle direct toss before introducing the backboard rebound.

Add a challenge

Vary the toss slightly to either side while the catcher still knows the approximate landing area.
