MAKE IT FIT YOUR GROUP

Coach the players in front of you.

Ages 12–14

Define a stop clearly and walk the first matchup and rebound assignments.

Ages 15–18

Vary starting situations; keep the turn finite and evaluate team coverage as well as the score.

Work & rest
Three possessions per defensive turn, then swap and reset. Add recovery before repeating the round.
Look for success
The team completes stops with possession and can identify the communication that helped.

Set it up

Set two teams of three and define a stop as a legal turnover or a secure defensive rebound. A missed shot without possession is not a completed stop. Each defensive turn lasts exactly three possessions.

Run the activity

  1. Check the ball to begin each possession and let the offense play from normal spacing.
  2. Defenders call matchups, contain the ball and communicate any help. Play through a controlled rebound after a shot.
  3. Count a complete stop, then reset from a checked ball. After three possessions, change roles regardless of the score.
  4. Compare the two teams’ totals and ask each to name a useful call or recovery. Take a reset before another three-possession round.
ONE CUE TO SAY OUT LOUD

“Talk early. Finish with the ball.”

Watch for this

Celebrating a forced miss while leaving the rebound unsecured, or extending the turn until tired players finally earn a stop.

Make it easier

Use guided offense with one drive and one pass before the shot.

Add a challenge

Vary the initial spacing or begin one possession from a controlled closeout.
