Help & recovery / 9 MINUTES
Shell: skip, adjust, then drive
Connect off-ball vision, movement on a skip pass and a sound help-or-stay decision.

MAKE IT FIT YOUR GROUP
Coach the players in front of you.
Ages 15–18
Adapt spacing to your team defense. Separate a bad rotation from a missed individual contest when reviewing the possession.
- Work & rest
- Three short possessions, then rotate and take a full reset.
- Look for success
- All four defenders can name their assignments and explain the help-or-stay choice after a skip.
4 attackers and 4 matched defenders
One basketball, Basket, Four perimeter markers
Half court with two high and two low receiving spots
Set it up
Space four attackers around the perimeter and assign each a defender. Start with passes only. Agree on your team’s gap and rotation rules before introducing a controlled drive.
Run the activity
- Move the ball through two normal passes and one skip pass while defenders adjust during flight and keep their matchups in view.
- Freeze after the skip. Check that one defender contains the ball and the other three can locate their own players.
- Restart with one controlled drive. Helpers decide whether the on-ball defender actually needs help, then communicate any recovery required by your team rule.
- Finish one live possession, reset the spacing and rotate after three possessions. Stop to correct double coverage rather than playing through a confused assignment.
“Travel with the pass. Help only the gap.”
Watch for this
Collapsing every defender toward the ball even when the first defender is still in control.
Make it easier
Use only passes and freeze every catch until matchups remain clear.
Add a challenge
Let attackers choose a cut or skip before the drive, while preserving the agreed coverage rule.
