Players

4 players: 2 offense and 2 defense

Equipment

2 basketballs, 4 practice pinnies for offense

Space

Half-court area around one basket

Set it up

Two defenders start inside the paint. Two offensive players align at the wings. Coach stands at the top of the key with a basketball.

Run the activity

  1. The coach shoots. Defenders locate their assigned opponents, establish legal space and track the ball without pushing or holding.
  2. Pursue the rebound at a reachable height and land on balance. One teammate calls for the ball to avoid a collision.
  3. The securing player protects the ball with elbows close, pivots and makes a visible, safe outlet pass to the coach.
  4. Defense scores a point for securing possession and completing the outlet. Offense scores a point for a controlled offensive rebound. Rotate roles after three shots.
ONE CUE TO SAY OUT LOUD

“Call your check, box out, snap the outlet”

Watch for this

Both defenders stare at the ball flight and leave their wing players completely unblocked to grab offensive rebounds.

Make it easier

Offensive players must wait one full second after the shot hits the rim before moving toward the basket.

Add a challenge

After the defensive rebound and outlet pass to coach, defenders immediately transition to offense and run a 2v2 fast break to the opposite end.
