MAKE IT FIT YOUR GROUP

Coach the players in front of you.

Ages 15–18

Use your team’s legal shooting range and footwork rules. Grade the decision separately from the result of the shot.

Work & rest
Two possessions per role; use the rotation to recover before the next live turn.
Look for success
The shooter identifies an open option and protects safe footwork under the arriving contest.
Players

3: shooter, guided closeout defender, outlet passer

Equipment

One basketball, Basket, Two floor markers

Space

Half court with a wing and a separate outlet window

Set it up

Put a shooter on one wing, an outlet at the top and a defender near the paint. The outlet begins with the ball; the defender varies a controlled closeout on the pass.

Run the activity

  1. The outlet passes to the shooter and stays available as a safe return. The defender closes without entering the shooter’s landing space.
  2. Read the arrival: take the balanced open shot, use one controlled dribble past an overplay, or return the ball when the lane is closed.
  3. End on the shot, controlled return or coach stop. The defender locates the ball and rebounds without undercutting.
  4. Rotate every two possessions. Before the next pair, ask the shooter which space the defender left available.
ONE CUE TO SAY OUT LOUD

“See the contest before the choice.”

Watch for this

Taking a preselected shot into a hard closeout or forcing a drive after the gap has closed.

Make it easier

Announce the defender’s cue and allow a clear catch-and-read pause.

Add a challenge

Add a second defender guarding the outlet and play the resulting two-on-two possession.
